Accuphy PingLive Sonar live sonar for ice fishing

Ice Fishing Sonar & Portable Setup Guide for Manitoba

You've augered your hole, the rods are rigged, and the question hits like it always does: is anything actually down there? A good sonar setup answers that before you've wasted an hour. This guide walks you through choosing a sonar system for Manitoba ice, then getting it powered and out to your spot without hauling a pile of loose gear.

Start with what you already own

Before you shop, take stock. Do you already have a display, a transducer or a battery you want to keep using? If you're starting fresh, you're choosing a whole system. If you're upgrading, you may only need the pieces that fill the gaps. Either way, write down the exact models you own so you can check fit and compatibility before you order.

Our featured pick: Accuphy PingLive

If you want live sonar without buying a dedicated sonar display, Accuphy PingLive is where we'd start. It sends live underwater sonar imagery to a compatible iOS or Android phone or tablet through its included Wi-Fi router and the free Accuphy Sonar app. The processor is built into the transducer, so there's no separate sonar black box to carry.

What that means for you on the ice:

  • See straight down your hole. The Down view covers 135 degrees and can look directly beneath an ice hole. Panoramic and Forward modes give you other ways to look around.
  • Room to work. The listed maximum depth or distance is 300 feet (91 metres), and the reinforced 20-foot cable gives you room to arrange your setup.
  • Mounts in the box. The box includes the transducer, router, panoramic mount, barrel mount and shaft mount.
  • Backed by a warranty. The listing includes a two-year Accuphy manufacturer warranty.

Ben at Online Outfitters reports that PingLive performs very well in cold weather. One thing to plan for: PingLive needs a power source with at least 6A output, and a battery isn't listed in the box. Check your phone or tablet against Accuphy's compatibility lists before you buy. For a closer look, read our post What's Below Your Ice Hole? A Look at Accuphy PingLive.

Compare PingLive with Garmin LiveScope options

If you'd rather run a dedicated chartplotter, Garmin LiveScope is the other main route. You'll find the options together in our LiveScope collection:

  • Complete ice kits. The ICE MASTER 1200 Pro Series Bundle puts a Garmin chartplotter, LiveScope Plus, a lithium battery and a transducer pole in one carry case. More on that below.
  • Display plus LiveScope. The ECHOMAP Ultra 2 106SV with LVS34 LiveScope transducer and GLS10 black box gives you the main sonar components. You'll still need to plan power, mounting and transport.
  • LiveScope systems on their own. If you already own a compatible Garmin display, a LiveScope Plus or LiveScope XR system may be the upgrade you need.
  • Panoptix. The Garmin Panoptix PS22-IF Ice Fishing Bundle is a separate Garmin option. Panoptix is not the same system as LiveScope, so compare them on their own terms.

The short version: PingLive uses a screen you may already carry, while a LiveScope setup is built around a dedicated Garmin chartplotter. Pick the one that fits how you like to fish and what you already own.

Plan for how you fish

Scouting and moving between holes. If you hop from hole to hole, how quickly you can pack up and reset matters as much as the screen. Choose a setup that travels as one piece.

Run and gun. When you're chasing fish all day, a carry case that keeps your display, battery and pole together saves you trips back to the truck.

Fishing from a fixed spot. If you set up and stay put, start with the display you prefer and the space you have for mounting it, then work out power.

Power and transport: the ICE MASTER 1200 bundle and transducer pole

If you're going the Garmin LiveScope route, the ICE MASTER 1200 Pro Series Bundle is the setup we'd point you to. Instead of hauling four pieces of gear out of your truck, you walk out with one carry case.

The product page lists these items in every bundle:

  • 1200 Series Shuttle, the ICE MASTER carry case that holds your unit, battery and pole as one rig
  • Your selected Garmin chartplotter
  • Garmin LiveScope Plus System with GLS 10 black box and LVS34 transducer
  • Amped Outdoors lithium battery (32Ah or 52Ah) with Bluetooth charger
  • LiveScope LVS34 transducer pole
  • Transducer pole bag
  • ICE MASTER microfiber towel

You build your bundle by choosing a chartplotter and a battery:

  • Chartplotter: ECHOMAP Ultra 2 106sv (10 inch), ECHOMAP Ultra 2 126sv (12 inch), GPSMAP 8610 (10 inch) or GPSMAP 8612 (12 inch)
  • Battery: Amped Outdoors 32Ah or 52Ah lithium (14.8V NMC)

The 1200 Series Shuttle flips up for fishing and folds down for transport. It has dual USB ports, a voltage meter, an SAE charging port and a backlit "Glow Tray" for charging glow lures, and it comes pre-wired with a fuse and master power switch. Check the product page for what's included with your exact configuration before you order.

Already have your Garmin LiveScope system? The LIVESCOPE Transducer Pole is a lightweight aluminum telescoping pole that extends from 24 to 55 inches below the ice, with locking positions every 6 inches and a folding tripod. It lets you switch between Forward, Down and Perspective modes, and it's available for Garmin LVS32, LVS34 and LVS62 transducers as well as Lowrance Active Target transducers. The shuttle and Amped Outdoors batteries are also sold on their own in the LiveScope collection.

Going with PingLive instead? Plan a power source with at least 6A output, and keep your phone and router sheltered on the ice.

Before you order

  • Confirm your exact display, transducer and phone or tablet models are compatible.
  • Check what's included on the product page for the version you're buying.
  • Match your mount and pole to your transducer.
  • Plan your power source and charger.
  • Think through how you'll carry it all out to your spot.
